We decided the structure should not match the traditional 1960s ranch style house where they live. Instead this building should stand alone, making a statement with shapes and composition recalling 1960s modern architecture. The cedar siding complements the setting – rolling hills with vineyard views and old oak trees. The steel trellis provides shade without overwhelming the scale of the 1000-square-foot building. The heavy timber staircase winds up through the tree branches, revealing expansive views of the property. The owners enjoy the building so much that they often find themselves guests in their own guesthouse.
