A massive, centuries-old oak tree fell into and crushed the original farmhouse on this rice farm along the Sacramento River. The owners wanted to redesign the entire structure to become a lodge where family members could gather to celebrate holidays, special events and each other’s company.
The house was taken down to the original redwood studs and then reconfigured to provide spaces both large and small for groups to gather. The main rooms of the house are flanked by covered or screened porches. Dormer windows and high ceilings flood the interior with daylight while the porches protect the house from the brutal valley sun. The exterior materials are reminiscent of a classic farmhouse, but are durable and low maintenance for longevity. Grandma and Grandpa would be very proud of the family compound now.
