1920s hacienda redux in Palm Springs, CA
How do you turn a tired but spacious property in Old Palm Springs into a contemporary estate while maintaining the original 1920s hacienda details? We tore down the middle of the house to create a welcoming entry courtyard with a steel-and-glass front door. We kept the original fireplaces and vaulted the ceilings. We relocated the garage to a side auto court and added a remote master suite with a spectacular view of the mountains. We demolished the 1970s pool and created a natural spring-style pool and spa with a disappearing perimeter that obscures the transition from grass to water. We incorporated outdoor rooms, breezeways and porches to shelter the homeowners from the blistering desert sun. All with the elegance and style of a 1920s-era Hollywood hacienda.
